Respected Sir :
SUB: PETITION SEEKING URGENT ACTION TO PROBE “ENCOUNTER KILLINGS” IN
GUJARAT IN WHICH A KERALITE WAS ONE OF THE FOUR VICTIMS
We draw your attention to the “encounter killings” of four persons by the
Gujarat Crime Branch Police on the wee hours of May 15, 2004, on the outskirts
of Ahmedabad city.
One of the four victims was a Keralite named Javed Gulam Mohammed Sheikh (32),
s/o M. R. Gopinathan Pillai, (Manaladi Thekkethil House, Thamarakulam, Alzppuzha
District).
Originally named Pranesh Kumar Pillai, he was converted into Islam about 12
years ago to marry a Muslim, Ms. Sajitha, a native of Pune in Maharashtra, and
became Javed Gulam Mohammed Sheikh. The Javed-Sajitha couple has three children,
Siddiq Mohammed Javed, Sadaf and Musa Khalilulla.
According to Mr. Gopinathan Pillai, his son along with his wife and children
last came to his house in Kerala on May 30, 2004, in the same blue Indica car
(MH02 JA 4786) in which all the four victims were travelling when the June 15
“encounter” took place in Ahmedabad city outskirts.
In 1991, it was Gopinathan Pillai who first took his son to Pune for employment.
After employing him in a electric cable company, Pillai returned to Kerala.
Later Pranesh got converted into Islam to marry Sajitha
Even after the conversion and marriage, all of them maintained amicable
relationship. Apart from Javed Gulam visiting his father’s house in Kerala,
Gopinathan Pillai also paid visits to his son’s house in Pune.
Making his last visit on May 30, Javed Gulam and his family left Kerala in the
same car on June 05. According to Gopinathan Pillai , on the fateful day of June 15
when the Ahmedabad “encounter” took place, his daughter-in-law, Sajitha,
telephonically informed him from Pune that Javed Gulam was missing for the past
four days. Since Javed Gulam was also a driver and was connected with a travel
agency, Gopinathan Pillai thought that somebody must have sought his service to
drive the taxi on a hired trip.
Gopinathan Pillai stoutly refused to believe the Gujarat Crime Branch allegation
on the possibility of his son having any remote connection with terrorism or
terror network. To the local “India Vision” TV channel the hapless father said
today: “My son do not have the courage even to kill a hen. I had been to his
house in Pune. There was no feeble indication about the possibility of his
becoming a terrorist. He converted into Islam only for the sake of marrying the
girl whom he loved, and not the least to become a terrorist.”
Mr. Gopinathan Pillai also demanded a full-fledged inquiry into the factual
circumstances under which the Gujarat Crime Branch of Police killed his son on
the outskirts of Ahmedabad city on June 15th early morning.
We, therefore, move this petition seeking your early action to conduct an
impartial and in-depth probe into this ghastly incident of “encounter” killing
four persons, including a girl college student of Mumbai, whom the Gujarat
Police allege were Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorists on a mission to kill Gujarat Chief
Minister Mr. Narendra Modi. However, the Gujarat police have not provided any
substantial evidence to substantiate this allegation after four days of the
killing till now.
Whatever information and materials on this incident that come to our notice in
future to help the NHRC probe will be sent to you promptly.
Awaiting your early action, we remain
Yours Sincerely,
Mukundan C. Menon
Secretary General (CHRO)
