SUBJECT: Mr. Henry Tiphagne & Mr. Nizamudeen, Human Rights activists and 14 other persons detained by police illegally

Mr. Henry Tiphagne, Executive Director of Madurai based People's Watch, Mr. Nizamudeen, State General Secretary of FEDCOT and 14 other persons [14 Human Rights Activities, 2 General Public including a women] had been detained by the Cuddalore police, yesterday morning. Intially police has informed that they were book the persons under non-bailable sections of Cr.PC., but later in the evening, due to pressure, they have dropped all sections and framed the arrest as prevention detention. All arrested persons has been take by force to the New Town Police Station in Cuddalore Town.

It is said that a hall has been booked to conduct 'Campaign Against Torture' [CAT] on 11-10-2004. But due to pressure from local police Superintendent, the hall has been cancelled without any prior information to the CAT authroised persons. While Mr. Henry and others enquirying on this matter with the hall authorities on the meeting day, a group of policemen headed by Deputy Superintendent of Police Mr. Payas Ferozkhan Abdullah forcefully entered the training hall and detained 16 persons.

Now-a-days, Tamil Nadu Police aiming their gun points directly to Civil Rights movements and Non-Governmental Organisations, who are exposing their violent activities to the general public as well to the proper authorities. These activities are totally undemocratic by the police. We requesting the State/Central, Human Rights Commission, International Human Rights Movements to taken immediate action against these culprits.
